Best Wheeled Coolers 2021 – Reviews And Top Picks

Wonder what rolling cooler is? Even the name itself speaks for itself “a cooler with wheels”, implying the transfer of the goods in the form of products that need to maintain a stable temperature regime that differs from the temperature outside. Quite often we can hear another interpretation like ice chest, for example. This is the main purpose of this useful device – you can keep some food there, and the cold drink will remain cold (who likes warm beer?). The refrigerator bag will carefully store the products from possible overheating, even in those cases when they were bought in the morning, and in the refrigerator they got only closer to the evening. Some sellers state the shelf-life of frozen products in coolers up to 5 days and do not specify at what ambient temperatures. These statements should be treated with caution, as in the heated products intensively develop pathogenic bacteria. It is known that heat inflows into an isolated chamber directly depend not only on the quality of thermal insulation, but also on the surrounding conditions. So how to choose a really useful best wheeled cooler you are going to find out in our buyers guide of the best coolers on the market.

YETI Tundra Haul Portable Wheeled Cooler

The Tundra Cooler is perfect for the highest, even triple-digit temperatures. Your food and drinks will stay fresh, approximately at 40F, so you can have a place for something other than ice bags. And once Yeti cooler with wheels kept ice for eight days! That’s a strong advantage, isn’t it? It holds 45 cans, approximately 8 quarts of water, beer or cola. Wheels are puncture-resistant and solid as is the whole cooler construction. Extra-thick, shock-resistant walls and freezer technologies block the heat and lock in the cold. Neverfail™ hinge is interlocked and protected from breaking, and special pressure-injected foam, called PermaFrost™ gives excellent resistance to wide-ranging temperatures — in any case, your ice will stay ice. Furthermore, you don’t need busted latches anymore — they stay in the past. Now, you are perfect with a durable rubber lid (called T-Rex). There are in molded latch keepers, so your cooler’s contents stay safe.

In addition, you can buy an ice pack (it is reusable) and a divider for more comfortable and long-term use.

  • 1-2 people. A 54-qt. cooler will most likely be all you requirement for seven days end outdoors trip. Longer than that you should need to consider an extra little 8-qt – 16qt. cooler.

  • 3-4 people. 62-qt – 77-qt. cooler to store food, and a 54-qt cooler for beverages.

  • 4 people and more. You should look for 100-qt+ wheeled coolers.

Size

sizes of a wheeled coolers

Exterior dimensions. In the first place, you’ll have to decide on space that you will transport the cooler in. It might be the trunk, rearward sitting or the back of a truck. Measure the space so you’ll know the biggest size of the cooler that will fit inside this zone. Next, when considering the outside measurements of the cooler, likewise consider any embellishments that project from the essential unit. This refers to handles, wheels and other equipment.

Interior dimensions. Next, it’s vital to consider how huge within the cooler ought to be. Since we’re all extraordinary, what works for one individual may not for another. Ensure that it is sufficiently huge inside to hold the measure of sustenance/refreshments that you regularly bring in the coolers you’ve already utilized. On the off chance that you found that they were too little, take it up a size for accommodation. By focusing on these four things, you will have more chances to find the best wheeled cooler that is perfect for you.

Mobility and Portability

Mobility and Portability of a wheeled cooler

It may not be that vital, still, you have to consider it. On the off chance that you are taller and need to squat lower with a specific end goal to hold the handle as you move, at that point you might be in a few troubles. In the event that you have to roll your cooler for long periods and distance, and have to squat down for long stretches at once, at that point you might need to think about a cooler with a more extended adaptive handle.

With regards to transporting your new cooler, at that point measurements will become possibly the most important factor. Handles and wheels connected to your cooler can make it cumbersome to transport and hard to put into trunks or rearward sitting arrangements. In case that you are going on a plane and will take a wheeled cooler, at that point it can turn out to be considerably more troublesome. Something you ought to focus on is the extent of the cooler, and additionally the connections, for example, handles.

So, you should consider:

  1. Number of wheels. The most popular are 2-wheels-on-back coolers with adjustable telescoping handle. There are also side-wheeled coolers with pivoting static, rotating side, and molded-in handle. Then comes 4-wheeled ice chests with heavy-duty swing-up handles. You should choose the most practical variant for you. Coolers with 2 wheels and telescoping handles are perfect for camping due to convenient movability and 4 locking wheeled coolers are perfect for parties.

  2. Wheel size. The size of wheels have a significant effect. Simply consider genuine vehicles and this will bode well. Wheels can be big or small, partially hidden in the cooler body or not. It depends on the weight and the surface (even or uneven, grassy, sandy, etc.).

  3. Wheel material. Generally, manufacturers produce rubber or plastic wheels. Manufacturers often use high-quality materials which are non-marking and perfectly fit to be rolled on boat or yacht deck.

  4. Surface. On the off chance that the zone you will utilize the cooler has harsh landscape, at that point you might need to consider a cooler with bigger wheels. There are universal cooler wheels (fit all surfaces) and those which are practical only on particular surface (grass, sidewalks, sand, or uneven, hard, smooth, etc.).

Empty weight

Pay attention to cooler’s empty weight. The more it weights the longer ice retention is. Light coolers might be good for a one-day trip and heavy cooler made of better materials will be a perfect solution for camping or travel.

Handles

Handles can be telescoping, molded-in, swing-up, pivoting static, and rotating. Coolers can be also equipped with shoulder straps.

Ice Retention and Insulation

Ice Retention and Insulation of a wheeled cooler

Ice retention is ostensibly the most essential factor picking a cooler. As the name infers, a “cooler” it is intended to keep things cool and some are greatly improved than others in achieving this assignment. As a rule cooler’s brand claim about 5 days or something like that. As the experience shows, this is by all accounts an overestimation on the producer’s end. The most ideal approach to discover the real ice retention standard is to converse with somebody who has utilized it in the different conditions or spend a couple of minutes perusing surveys online from real clients. The reason that you utilize coolers is to keep food and refreshments frosty for as long as it possible. The insulation of the cooler points at the time that ice will stay solidified protecting the food from any impact. Pick a cooler with wheels that has no less than 2 inches of insulation and tight gaskets around the cover. A fast, simple plug system is necessary for quick depleting water.

Paying attention to ice retention you can see for what purpose your cooler can serve. If you are going to spend 4-5 days traveling or camping, you’d better look for coolers with extra insulation. If it’s really hot outside, you’d better supply your cooler with fresh ice oftener (in case you have such an opportunity). You may use dry ice. Manufacturers tried to improve their coolers’ ice retention capacity and found out that dry ice is able to turn your cooler into a real freezer with dry ice (-109.3°F). Such coolers are usually expensive and weight much.

In case you need to take your yogurt with to eat it at your work, you can choose soft-sided 24h or one-day variants because they are easy-to-carry and keep ice at – 40˚F from few hours to one day. Such coolers are not good for uncooked meals. In case ice melts earlier you can be poisoned or get problems with digestion.

Material

Most camping coolers are made of Poly materials, which are good ones, cheap and durable material. Soft coolers are made of strong fabrics, such as nylon and polyester. Hard bags are made of hard polymeric materials. Foamed polymers, such as polyurethane foam and polyethylene foam, are used for the thermal insulation of two-layer coolers. If the inner material is not like an amalgam, then it will be worse to retain heat or cold.

Durability

durability of a wheeled cooler

Coolers will dependably confront a decent amount of mishandling, and you need one that can easily deal with the pressure. Normally, you require a wheeled cooler for using it particularly in rough conditions. These models are bear-proof and come intended to last and highlight valuable components, for example, stick style pivots, unbending dividers, elastic o-ring seals, bigger handles, plastic that resists ultraviolet and tighten channels.

Conventional models work best for short end week trips and for the most part to store drinks. The higher-end models cost up to five times more, yet their contending preference is their better protection execution and general solidness.

There are also styrofoam coolers but they are not solid and aren’t used today.

Soft-Sided or Hard

Soft coolers are very convenient for traveling in a car, outdoors, and many other occasions when food and drinks need to be kept cold or hot. Although their warranty period does not exceed several months, they usually serve about 5 years. For the manufacture, mainly elastic materials are used so that the cooler can be folded. The design of the hard cooler is a rigid frame, so it takes up more space than the soft cooler. But there is an advantage: the required temperature is maintained in it longer. So the choice of soft or hard cooler depends on how long you are going to spend outdoors, number of people (big or small) and the way you are going to travel: by car, by boat, by plane, by train, or just walking. That’s why it’s better to see their pros and cons:

Additional Things to Consider

Locking System

wheeled coolers locking system

When people go camping for few days, it’s important to be sure that nobody will steal something from the cooler when nobody sees. That’s why there are different types of locks offered by manufacturers. The most popular locking systems are:

  • Stainless locks (don’t corrode or rust);
  • Locking bracket (high strength and anticorrosion material);
  • Locking cable (difficult-to-break device);
  • Lumintrail Combination Padlock (pretty much universal).

Check what locking device your cooler can be adjusted to.

The Purpose or Good for

All coolers can store food and drinks but some of them suit better for specific purposes. For example, Pelican cooler is equipped with a fish scale, non-marking wheels, and UV protection. So, it might be the best variant for boats. Fishermen can store their take their many hours because the cooler promises 10 days ice retention. Coleman with telescoping handle, antimicrobial inner covering, pockets on sides and front zipped pocket could be a great choice for those who want to store some food during football games or short trips. Rubbermaid cooler has in-built dividers and can’s holders so that you can keep your drinks there. Coolers with universal wheels for all terrain can be taken to the seaside because they perfectly roll on sandy surface.

That’s why it’s necessary to pay attention to ice retention capacity, maximum and minimum temperature during hot and cold days, accessories like bottle openers, fish scales, etc. to know what purpose can a cooler serve better. One more feature is the quality of wheels, their size and ability to move on various terrain (some coolers cannot roll through grass or sand).

Warranty

All coolers have limited warranty. As a rule, hard and soft-sided coolers have 1-3 years warranty and 1-day coolers (like RTIC) have 90-days warranty. Some manufacturers, like BESTEK, give 18-months guarantee and 100% money return within 30 days from the day purchase.

Substituting details have 6 months – 1-year warranty.

Dry-bins and Dividers

Dry-bins and dividers are essential for cooler on the grounds that the dubious trails of outdoors can cause a considerable measure of jarring inside a moving cooler. You don’t need your pack of beignets splashed by the ice and buildup keeping your brew and water frosty. Some cooler makers offer additional dividers that can be settled inside the cooler to isolate ice and dry goods.

Base Drain

It is a certain requirement for two reasons; to start with, you don’t need to get and tilt, the cooler to receive liquefied ice water in return, and second thing if your cooler producer did not think a drain was sufficiently imperative to incorporate, at that point you need to pick an alternate brand.

Drink Holders

Molded drink holders may be advantageous for cooler, yet most likely won’t be utilized much on the bigger sustenance coolers. Consider where your cooler normally is while you are enjoying the great outdoors to choose if this is an element you may make utilization of or need.

Plates

Insert plates, plates that ride on top-edges of the cooler, over the mass stuff in the base. Useful for keeping small things isolate from different nourishment. It is up to you would they be helpful to you, or would you lean toward the additional storage without them.

Section dividers

Section dividers these are normally just set in bigger limit coolers. It is anything but a vital element, yet in the event that you are purchasing a bigger cooler, they are exceptionally useful with nourishment stockpiling.

Other Things

A few coolers accompany great implicit adornments, for example, container holders, blenders or ice crushers. Most likewise accompany deplete plugs at the front or side to dispose of fluid much effortlessly. A couple of models make utilization of electric cooling instruments. Not at all like the customary coolers, they don’t require ice, and they work much like your normal icebox. They should be connected to consistent divider outlets or an auto’s cigarette lighter to work. These alternatives would be perfect for longer trips and in circumstances where you will have a relentless power supply.

Pros and Cons of Wheeled Coolers

With wheel on a cooler, you can without an effort move the cooler wherever you need, with no assistance. Lifted wheeled coolers (4-wheeled) constrain the measure of warmth exchange starting from the earliest stage the cooler. At the point when a cooler lays on a hot surface, there is an exchange of warmth starting from the earliest stage the cooler. This warms the base of the cooler up while currently liquefying the ice at a speedier rate.

Advantages:

  • Helps to avoid back injuries;
  • Decreases the impact of outdoor heat on stuff inside the cooler;
  • It’s easy to move and roll the cooler;
  • Can be very portable.

Disadvantages:

  • You may need replace the wheels after a while;
  • The wheels may be hard to find, especially those which would fit;
  • Some large ice chests are hard to move due to empty cooler itself may weight a lot;
  • There are not all coolers that can withstand different rough terrains.

How to choose:

  1. How many people

    • If there are only 1-2 persons, 20-50QT cooler might be enough;
    • A group of 3-4 people could get up to 50QT cooler for food and 70 QT cooler for drinks;
    • A big company (more than 4) might need more than 100QT cooler.
  2. How many days

    Coolers’ ice retention can last from several hours to 5 days according to manufacturer’s data. A person must take into consideration weather conditions (cool or hot), number of days and new ice availability. If a person can afford dry ice, it’s possible to get not only a cooler but a freezer for uncooked and long period food storage. A number of people should also be taken into consideration. The information is mentioned in the 1st point above.

  3. Access to new ice

    Some manufacturers promise 5 days of ice retention but according to customers’ reviews most coolers can’t keep ice longer than 2-4 days. That’s why it’s very important to have access to new ice in case a person wants to spend more than 4 days camping.

  4. Distance to carry

    Distance is also an important issue. For example, if you want to take cool drinks for a football match or on boat for fishing, it’s better to take light coolers. If you want to bring cool drinks to the seaside, then it might be good to get a cooler with wheels. If there are no wheels, you can buy wheels kit separately. See if the kit can roll on all terrain or require some specific surface.

Conclusion

In general, a conventional wheeled cooler could be a soft-sided cooler or plastic box consisting of two vessels inserted into each other. Between them is placed an insulating material – granular or pressed foam. For such a device, it will take a bit more space than for a bag, due to the use of a structure with ribs of strength. But there is a significant plus of such a rigid layout – the ability to withstand the set temperature for a longer time. Roto molded coolers are also very popular nowadays due to their durability and a long period of ice retention. Rotational molding is the process of wheeled cooler body construction. The manufacturers coat the mold with expensive and solid plastic material distributing it equally on all parts of the cooler. Rotomolding improves insulation throughout the cooler body and makes it serve longer and avoid corrosion. Roto molded coolers are heavier but fit all terrain.

So, first of all, it is necessary to determine your own needs. So, for example, if you need to maintain a low temperature longer than 4 days, you should choose a suitable cooler which ice retention period allows doing that. If, on the contrary, ice chest is needed to keep heat, you can choose a model with the appropriate purpose. No less important criterion is the required capacity (volume). In addition, the transportation methods should also be considered. Finally, it will be superfluous to pay attention to the warranty period of the goods, as well as to the manufacturer, since best wheeled coolers by reputable brands can really serve for a longer period.

Are hard coolers better than soft ones?

    By:
    Chris Hayes
    To:
    Jeremy J.

    As with every type of cooler, soft ones are lighter and more portable, while hard coolers keep the cold longer. Yet, when it comes to wheeled coolers, I would personally choose the hard coolers, as you will be rolling it around all the time. In case it falls, the hard cooler will keep the insides safer.

Which cooler is better, Coleman or Igloo?

    By:
    Chris Hayes
    To:
    Nixon

    Hmm... That’s a hard one. I’d say Coleman is better at ice retention and keeping the temperature cold and generally cheaper, though they are less durable than Igloo. Igloo, however, is pretty much indestructible, great for the long journeys and large crowds where safety is your key concern. Yet, the ice melts rather quickly, and the price is higher. So, I guess it’s up to what you value the most.

Thank you for the review on coolers! What type of cooler would be best for travelling? I’ve always had traditional models, and was thinking of experimenting with something new.

    Well, most of the wheeled coolers here are traditional ice chests. No thermoelectric ones, and very few are soft. Though if you want to try something out of the ordinary, why not take the Coolest Cooler with a speaker and installed blender (!) or the Tunes2Go Koolmax? They might not be the best in terms of quality, but they will certainly make a trip more fun.

Thank you for the recs! I’m thinking about following your lead and getting the top wheeled cooler here – the Yeti Tundra Haul. I was just wondering if I can use it on a boat? Would it move and slide a lot?

    By:

    To:
    WebSpider

    Yes, you can! The wheels are pretty sturdy, and its robust rubber keeps the cooler immobile when needed. Besides, it’s literally bulletproof, so even if it slides and crashes into something, it can endure any shock.

I can’t understand whether the Bluetooth speaker affects the quality of a cooler according to reviews. These coolers look very well-designed, but I am not sure that they are functional. I am interested in the Coolest Cooler and Tunes2Go models.

    The Bluetooth speaker does not affect refrigerating capacities in any way. Moreover, advanced insulation technology will keep ice frozen for up to three days.

Does Igloo Marine Breeze Roller Cooler provide enough freezing to keep an ice-cream cold and well-shaped? I want to surprise my kids with ice-cream while camping with a cooler on wheels; I don’t want it to melt.

    Igloo Marine Breeze Roller is a very portable cooler, not a freezer. So, if you want to keep the ice-cream fresh, we advise you to freeze it deep in advance

I wonder which size cooler is the best. Could you help me, please?

    To:
    Jake Black

    It depends on what you are going to use the cooler for – if it’s a small picnic somewhere near your home, I recommend a small cooler (17 to 25 quarts). If you’re going on a road trip with a lot of friends and plan to carry a lot of things with you, take a large one (60 to 99 quarts). The average size of a cooler is 36 to 59 quarts, and it’s suitable for almost every occasion.

Thanks for the article guys, it’s a lot clearer now. Though there’s one thing I didn’t get – do Yeti have wheeled coolers? If yes, can you recommend one?

    Josh74

    Actually yes, Yeti has recently introduced a new model that has wheels on it. The model called Yeti Tundra Haul, you can find more about it here. I will definitely add info about it in my article!

By:
Chris Hayes - Editor

In that case, I recommend the Coleman 42-can Soft Cooler. There’s plenty of space to hold enough food and drinks for a huge picnic and it provides long-time ice retention. And it perfectly fits your price range!

By:
Rick

Well, it shouldn’t be more than 50$, spacy enough to provide food and drinks for everybody and it should keep ice cold for a long time.
